Quick bookAlso called Kikuletwa or Maji Moto: a clear, spring-fed pool about 40 km from Moshi, around 27 °C, where visitors swim.
Chemka Hot Springs, also called Kikuletwa or Maji Moto, is a spring-fed pool in the lowlands of Hai District, about 40 km from Moshi. Water rises from the ground into a clear pool ringed by palm trees and flows on towards the Kikuletwa River.
Warm rather than hot. The water stays around 27 °C. "Chemka" is Swahili for "boiling", which describes the way the water bubbles up from below, not its temperature.
The pool is deep in places, 6 to 10 metres by most accounts, so it suits confident swimmers. Small fish live in the water and nibble at your feet if you stand still. Bring swimwear and a towel.
We stop at Chemka in the afternoon, at the end of the Materuni waterfall and coffee day from Moshi. Any entrance fee is confirmed with you before you pay.
